The Simple Road Trip Packing List
What You Actually Need (Nothing More)
Real talk: Most road trip guides are 8,000 words of stress. This one is not.
This guide gives you the basics. The stuff you will actually use. The things you will actually forget.
Everything else? You can buy it on the road or live without it.

The 5 Questions You Must Answer First
Before you pack anything, ask these 5 questions. Takes 5 minutes.
1. How many days are you driving?
- 1-2 days → Pack light. No laundry needed.
- 3-5 days → Plan one laundry stop or pack more.
- 6+ days → You will do laundry. Accept it.
2. Who is in the car?
- Solo → You control everything. Easy.
- Couple → Agree on music and stops BEFORE you leave.
- Kids → Stop every 2-3 hours. Double the snacks.
- Friends → Everyone says “I don’t care” about music. Everyone cares. Make a plan.
3. Where are you sleeping?
- Hotels → Pack light. Bring shower flip flops.
- Camping → This is a different list. Search camping guide.
- Friends/family → Bring a small gift. Bring your own towel.
- Car → Window shades, sleep mask, blanket. Rest stops are safest.
4. What is your route?
Look at a map. Find the long stretches with no towns. Those need extra gas and water.
5. What is the weather… everywhere?
Check weather for every state you drive through. Mountains have their own weather. Pack for the worst, not the best.
The Emergency Kit (10 Items)
Put these in one bag. Keep it on top of everything in your trunk.
| Item | Why You Need It |
|---|---|
| Jumper cables or jump starter | Dead battery = most common breakdown |
| Spare tire + jack + lug wrench | Check spare’s air pressure BEFORE you leave |
| Tire inflator | For slow leaks. Plugs into cigarette lighter. |
| First aid kit | Bandages, pain reliever, allergy meds, tweezers |
| Flashlight or headlamp | Car problems happen at night. Headlamp is better. |
| Reflective triangles | Warn other drivers if you’re on the shoulder |
| 1 gallon of water per person | For drinking OR your car’s radiator |
| Blanket | If you’re stuck waiting for help in cold weather |
| Multi-tool + duct tape + zip ties | For small fixes |
| Phone charger + power bank | A dead phone on the roadside is useless |
Nice to have but not essential: reflective vest, fire extinguisher, $50 cash, paper map.
Food & Snacks (Keep It Simple)
The Cooler
Freeze half your water bottles. They act as ice packs AND become cold drinks later.
What to pack in the cooler:
- Water bottles (more than you think)
- Cheese sticks
- Yogurt tubes (freeze them)
- Apples, grapes, carrots (pre-wash at home)
- Deli meat and tortillas (bread gets squished)
- Hard boiled eggs (peel them at home)
The Dry Snack Bag
Keep this within reach of the driver.
- Chips, pretzels, crackers (individual packs stop overeating)
- Granola bars, fruit snacks, cookies
- Trail mix (make your own = cheaper)
- Apples and bananas (travel well)
The Emergency Snack Stash
A separate bag of “last resort” snacks for:
- Traffic jams
- Missed meals
- Cranky kids or adults
- Late-night arrivals when everything is closed
Meal Planning Tips
- Day 1 lunch → Pack sandwiches from home
- Breakfasts → Hotel? Camping? Plan ahead
- Restaurant meals → Budget 1-2 per day
- Grocery stops → Plan where you’ll restock
Clothing (Pack Less Than You Think)
For 3-4 Days
- 3-4 shirts
- 2-3 pants or shorts
- 4 underwear
- 4 socks
- 1 hoodie or fleece
- 1 rain jacket (non-negotiable)
- 2 pairs of shoes
For 1 Week
Add 2-3 more of everything above. Plan to do laundry or re-wear things.
The Pro Tip
Pack neutral colors that all match. 3 shirts + 2 pants = 6 outfits. No one cares what you wore yesterday.
Don’t Forget
- Swimsuit (if pools or beaches)
- Hat and sunglasses
- Sleepwear
- One nicer outfit (for unexpected nice dinners)
Entertainment (Survive the Miles)
Audio
- Playlists (let everyone pick 5 songs)
- Audiobooks (free from library apps like Libby)
- Podcasts (download BEFORE you lose signal)
Screen-Free Games
- 20 Questions
- License plate game
- Alphabet game (find A-Z on signs)
- “Would you rather…”
Tech
- Tablet with movies DOWNLOADED (streaming won’t work)
- Headphones (for passengers)
- Power bank
The Golden Rule
Download everything before you leave. You will lose signal. Streaming will not work.
For Kids
- Activity bag per kid (new small toys = longer attention)
- Individual snack packs (prevents arguments)
- Wet wipes (multiple packs)
- Extra clothes (complete outfit per kid)
- Tablet with downloaded shows
Tech & Navigation
Navigation
- Phone mount (glance at it, don’t stare)
- Offline maps downloaded (Google Maps: download entire regions)
- Paper map (when tech fails)
- Written addresses (don’t rely on phone memory)
Tech Gear
- Car charger with multiple USB ports
- Portable power bank (10,000mAh minimum)
- Headphones for passengers
- Dash cam (cheap peace of mind)
Comfort (Small Things, Big Difference)
For the Car
- Travel pillow (neck support)
- Blanket (fleece = lightweight)
- Sleep mask (for daytime nappers)
- Sunglasses (spare pair in glove box)
For Overnight Stops
Keep a separate “hotel bag” with:
- Toiletries
- Sleep clothes
- Phone charger
- Next day’s outfit
Grab this bag and go. No unpacking the whole car at midnight.

- Soap, shampoo, face wash
- Moisturizer, lip balm, sunscreen
- Brush, hair ties, deodorant
- Feminine products (enough + extras)

Before You Leave (15 Minutes)
Paper Stuff (5 minutes)
Take photos of:
- Driver’s license
- Insurance card
- Registration
- Hotel confirmation numbers
Write down on a sticky note:
- Roadside assistance number
- Hotel phone number and address
- One emergency contact not traveling with you
Put sticky note in glove box.
Car Check (5 minutes)
- Look at tires. Low? Cracks? Use a quarter for tread depth.
- Check oil. Low or looks like chocolate milk? Get an oil change.
- Check lights. Headlights, brights, turn signals, brake lights.
- Fill washer fluid. Bug splatters happen.
Phone Setup (5 minutes)
- Download offline maps for every state you drive through
- Download music, podcasts, audiobooks
- Share your location with someone at home
The Night Before
- Fill gas tank (don’t leave this for morning)
- Pack the car (morning is for coffee, not Tetris)
- Charge everything (phones, power banks, tablets)
- Lay out driving clothes (including socks and shoes)
- Set alarm 30 minutes earlier than you think
What NOT to Bring
- Valuables in plain sight (lock in trunk)
- Too much “just in case” stuff (you won’t use it)
- Glass bottles (breakable, dangerous)
- Aerosol cans in hot car (can explode)
- All your cash in one place (split it up)
The Honest Truth
You will forget something. It’s fine.
Gas stations sell phone chargers. Grocery stores sell snacks. Target sells whatever clothing you forgot.
The only things you cannot replace on the road:
- Prescription medications
- Your ID and wallet
- Your car keys
Everything else? Buy it or live without it.
Now stop stressing. Pack the car. And enjoy the drive.
