The Family Vacation Packing List

Fact: Many parents forget things when they go on vacation with their families. In fact, sixty-eight percent of parents forget at least one important thing. One in four parents end up buying things like sunscreen, chargers, or pajamas at the resort gift shop because they forgot to pack them.

There is another thing that nobody really talks about.

The average family spends forty-seven dollars on things they already have at home. They do this because they packed in a hurry and forgot that they already had these things.

I made this guide so that this does not happen to you.

Below you will find a family vacation packing list. It is a printable list that is organized by category. Real parents have tested it. It is free to download. You do not need to give your email address or join a membership to get it. It is a smart checklist that will save you time, money, and stress at the airport.

Let us pack.

Why Most Family Packing Lists Fail (And Ours Doesn’t)

Most packing lists are just lists of things like shirts and socks. That is not helpful.

A good family vacation packing list should answer three questions.

  1. What things do parents usually forget to pack?
  2. What is cheaper to bring with you than to buy when you get there?
  3. How do you pack for ages at the same time?

This printable list answers those questions.

It was made from family trips.

Before You Pack

Do this before you open your suitcase. It will save you a lot of time.

  1. Check the luggage rules for your airline. Different airlines have rules.
  2. Check the weather at your destination. Do not just check the weather where you live.
  3. Check what your hotel or rental place provides. Some places have things like cribs, hair dryers, and beach towels.
  4. Make a pile of things you might forget, like passports, medicine, chargers, and glasses.
  5. Take a photo of your suitcase. You will look at it again when you are packing to go

This routine will reduce your anxiety about forgetting things.

The Complete Family Vacation Packing List

Use this list to pack room by room.

Every item on this list is included in the free printable list at the end of this article.

Clothing for Each Family Member

Do not pack clothes that you might wear. Pack clothes that you will actually wear.

For adults and teenagers:

  • Pack one outfit for each day and two extra outfits.
  • Bring two pairs of shoes. Do not bring shoes on vacation.
  • Bring one outfit for dinner or photos.
  • Bring sleepwear. This is the forgotten clothing item.
  • Bring underwear and socks. Bring one and a half times the number of days you will be on your trip.
  • Bring a jacket or hoodie. Planes and evenings can be cold.

For kids who are two to twelve years old:

  • Pack two outfits for each day.
  • Bring two pairs of shoes.
  • Bring one sweatshirt or fleece.
  • Bring pajamas. Bring pairs.
  • Bring two swimsuits for each child. This way, one suit can be dry while the other is being used.

For babies and toddlers who’re under two years old:

  • Pack three outfits for each day.
  • Bring six to eight bibs or bandana bibs.
  • Bring two sleep sacks or wearable blankets.
  • Bring socks with grippers.
  • Bring a sun hat with a chin strap.

Tip: roll your clothes of folding them. You can fit clothes in your suitcase and you can see everything at once.

Toiletries and Health

These are the things that parents usually forget to pack:

  • Toothbrush charger or batteries
  • Kids nail clippers
  • Ear pain relief for flights
  • Thermometer
  • Your basic toiletry list should include:
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Sunscreen. Use reef sunscreen if you are going to be near the ocean.
  • Aloe for sunburns
  • Bug spray. This is especially important for evenings.
  • Basic first aid kit. This should include things like band-aids, antiseptics, and tweezers.
  • Children’s pain or fever medicine. Do not assume you can find your brand at your destination.
  • Motion sickness bands or medicine
  • Hand sanitizer and wipes

One rule to follow: put all liquids in zip-lock bags before you leave home. Use one bag for each category like dental, first aid and kids medicine.

This makes airport security and hotel unpacking easier.

Electronics and Entertainment

This is the category that causes the most last-minute purchases at gift shops.

Bring:

  • Phone and watch chargers. Long cables are better.
  • Power bank. Airports often have outlets.
  • Tablet and kid-proof case
  • Downloaded. Shows. WiFi is not always reliable.
  • Headphones for each child
  • Car charger if you are going on a road trip
  • Universal plug adapter for trips
  • Bring entertainment for travel days:
  • One new small toy or activity for each child. Open it before you give it to them.
  • Sticker books
  • Crayons and paper. Do not bring markers because they can leak.
  • Snacks that’re not messy. Avoid things like melted chocolate.

Tip for parents: do not give your kids the toy at home. Give it to them when you are on the plane or in the car. This will help them be patient.

Luggage and Packing Gear

This is not extra. This is important.

What works for families:

  • One checked suitcase for shared items like toiletries, shoes and jackets.
  • One personal carry-on for each person. Even toddlers can have a backpack.
  • Packing cubes. These are very helpful.
  • Wet. Zip-locks for dirty clothes or wet swimsuits.
  • Luggage tags with your contact information. Put these on every bag.
  • Collapsible laundry hamper. This will keep your hotel room organized.

What to skip:

  • many suitcases. These can be hard to move.
  • Hard-shell carry-ons for kids. These can be too heavy for them to manage.
  • Printable Family Vacation Packing List
  • You made it through the guide. Now you can get the checklist.
  • The printable list includes:
  • All categories in a checkbox format
  • A separate column for last-minute items
  • A blank notes section for destination-specific items
  • One page only. You do not have to flip through documents.

One page. No email needed. Instant download.

Three Real-World Packing Hacks

These do not fit into a category. They are helpful.

Hack number one: the emergency outfit in every carry-on

Delayed luggage happens. Put one outfit, underwear swimsuit and pajamas for each person in a separate carry-on.

If your checked bag is lost for twenty four hours you will still be okay.

Hack number two: use your phone camera as a memory tool

  • Take photos of:
  • Your hotel room number
  • Your car parking spot
  • Your packed suitcase. This will help you remember what you brought.
  • Your childs outfit each morning. This will help you identify them in places.
  • Hack number three: the coming home pouch
  • Keep one pouch empty in your suitcase.
  • The night before you come home throw in socks, random receipts and the hotel key card.
  • When you get home empty that pouch first. This way you will not lose anything

What Not to Bring

  • A packing list is also a list of things not to bring.
  • Do not bring:
  • jewelry. This can cause stress.
  • Full-size toiletries. Buy travel sizes or decant.
  • Than two pairs of shoes per person. Shoes can be heavy.
  • Clothes for made-up scenarios
  • comfort items for kids. It is smarter to bring a lovey.
  • If you have not used something on your two trips do not bring it.

Final Checklist: The Night Before You Leave

Do these five things. They will take ten minutes. Save you a lot of stress in the morning.

  • Charge all devices and your power bank
  • Put passports and IDs in your bag. Do not put them in your suitcase.
  • Lay out travel day outfits for every person
  • Download maps or movies
  • Run the dishwasher and take out the trash. This way you will come home to a house.
