Packing well comes down to one thing: knowing what your specific trip actually needs, instead of following one generic list for every kind of travel. A week in Bali needs almost nothing in common with a ski trip to the Alps or six months of backpacking through Southeast Asia — and that’s exactly why we’ve built this hub around real trip types, not a single one-size-fits-all list.

Below, every checklist is grouped into one of six categories: destinationtrip typeseasoncarry-on/one-bag travelinternational travel, and cruises. Find the category that matches your next trip, pick your exact checklist, and download the free printable PDF — no sign-up required.

Not sure where to start?

If this is a short, simple trip, start with Trip Type. If you’re going somewhere specific and want local tips (weather, customs, plug types), start with Destination instead.

Travel Packing FAQs

Start a running list 1–2 weeks before your trip, but do the actual packing 1–2 days before, so you have time to launder or buy anything last-minute.

A carry-on fits in the overhead bin (usually up to 22x14x9 inches), while a personal item fits under the seat in front of you, like a backpack or purse. Airlines allow one of each for free.

Lay everything out before packing, then remove at least 20%. Most travelers use less than half of what they bring — our 5-4-3-2-1 packing method guide walks through exactly how to right-size your bag.
