I used to be terrible at packing. I’d throw everything I owned into a suitcase, zip it up with difficulty, and spend my entire vacation wearing the same three outfits while the rest sat untouched. Then I’d come home, unpack, and wonder why I bothered.
The problem wasn’t the destination or the trip length — nobody ever taught me how to pack. I figured it out through trial and error, stressful airport weigh-ins, and the painful realization that I’d packed white shoes for rainy London. This guide is everything I wish someone had told me first.
The Golden Rule
Pack for one week, no matter how long your trip is. Do laundry once. It’s cheaper than extra baggage, and you won’t be dragging a 50-pound suitcase around.
1. The Packing Method That Actually Works
Three steps, every time: lay everything out that you want to bring, remove about a third of it (you won’t miss it — most travelers only wear 60–70% of what they pack), then pack by category so unpacking doesn’t turn into a 2am suitcase excavation.
Why rolling beats folding
Rolled clothes wrinkle less, compress up to 30% smaller, stand upright so you can see everything, and shift less in transit. Lay the item flat, fold in the arms, then roll from the bottom like a burrito.
Wear your bulky stuff
Your coat, heaviest shoes, and thickest sweater shouldn’t go in the suitcase — wear them on the plane instead. Saves space, skips the weight penalty, and keeps you warm in transit.
“My No.1 strategy in packing a carry-on is to start from the bottom up: choose your day shoe and nighttime shoe, then plan the rest accordingly.”
— Tesa Totengco, Travel+Leisure A-List Advisor
Build a capsule wardrobe
Pick a neutral color scheme and choose items that all mix and match — 4 t-shirts, 2 pants, 1 jacket, 1 pair of shoes creates 8–10 different outfits. Add accessories to change the look.
2. Documents, Money & Electronics
These are the items that can actually cancel a trip if forgotten — worth double-checking before anything else.

6. How to Pack Your Suitcase
1. Bottom layer: heavy items near the wheels (shoes, heavy toiletries). 2. Packing cubes: group t-shirts, underwear/socks, pants, and outerwear separately. 3. Roll, don’t fold. 4. Fill gaps with small items — stuff socks into shoes. 5. Top layer: immediate-need items go on top. 6. Leave 20% empty for souvenirs.
Carry-on essentials
Documents, one change of clothes, medications, power bank + chargers, insurance info, empty water bottle, scarf, snacks, headphones, and any valuables.
7. Common Packing Mistakes
MISTAKE 01
Packing for every scenario
Beaches, hiking, formal dinners, “just in case” — the result is a heavy bag and the same two outfits worn all trip.
Fix: pack for 70% of the trip. Buy the rest there
MISTAKE 02
Bringing brand-new shoes
New shoes on a trip are a blister waiting to happen.
Fix: break in shoes 2+ weeks before leaving.
MISTAKE 03
Not checking ID/passport validity
This one can actually cancel a trip — many countries require 6 months’ validity.
Fix: check the date the moment you start planning.
MISTAKE 04
Overpacking liquids
“Liquids are the bane of the light traveler — heavy, bulky, prone to leakage.” — Doug Dyment
Fix: switch to solid toiletries.
MISTAKE 05
Packing cotton for everything
Cotton absorbs sweat, wrinkles, and takes forever to dry.
Fix: choose merino wool, bamboo, or synthetics.
MISTAKE 06
No “home base” for items
If your bag gets opened in transit, everything becomes a mess.
Fix: Packing cubes keep things organized and regardless.
MISTAKE 07
No room for souvenirs
You’ll buy things — it’s inevitable.
Fix: Leave 20% of the suitcase empty.
MISTAKE 08
No backup clothes in carry-on
If your checked bag is delayed, you’re stuck.
Fix: No backup clothes in carry-on.
